  • The Office for National Statistics has released figures for reported domestic violence which reveal that 1.03 million domestic abuse-related incidents were recorded by the police in the year to March 2016. In 421,000 of these incidents, a criminal offence was committed, which represents 1 in 10 of all crimes recorded.

As regards prosecution, a decision to charge was made for 70% of domestic abuse-related cases referred to the CPS by the police, of which three-quarters resulted in conviction.

Where prosecutions were unsuccessful 53% withered because of either victim retraction, victim non-attendance or evidence that the victim did not support the case. In 22% of unsuccessful prosecutions the defendant was acquitted by a jury or magistrates after a trial.

You can read the full figures and the methodology on the ONS website.
